Resume Critiques - What do we do? |
| |
|
I thought I would include this article to give the DIY resume writers/clients out there an idea of how to really create an awe inspiring, sharp looking document with impact!
So what is it that I see primarily when I receive a clients resume, with a request to critique it? The short answer is the following:
§ Long winded, general, boring lists of duties and responsibilities
§ No months listed in the dates of employments. For example, 2003-2005 could mean 3 years if it is from January 2003 to December 2005 or it could mean 14 months if it was December 2003 to January 2005. Get the idea?
§ Clients telling a story in straight, unformatted text which will mean the reader opens their CV and puts it straight into the "No" pile
§ Use of MS templates, very uninspiring and doesn’t do any favours as far as impact is concerned
§ Spelling, grammatical and punctuations errors (often repeated many times within the one page!)
§ Long, long resumes, between 8 and 15 pages
§ No idea of what a person did, or their achievements for any of their roles. That is, simply stating where you worked, for how long and your position title. And that’s it!?
§ Including date of birth, marital status and family status within a resume. One client even gave a rundown of his dog. Yes really, I am not telling a lie here! Can you believe it?
§ Lack of any real achievements or highlights
§ Weird looking clipart pictures within resumes (I have seen clocks, butterflies, books, pencils, you name it…)
§ Over kill as far as colours and graphics are concerned
§ Going too far back within the resume (Some as far back as the 60s!)
§ Boring, plain layout with no impact or Wow factor. The resume needs to create a big impression as soon as it is opened. |
