I have found that over the years, many clients submit their resume, cover letter or selection criteria and a week or two later just assume that they haven’t been successful. Only to receive a call three months later asking them to attend an interview!
Be proactive in your job search. If you have a particular position that you are very interested in, don’t just sit there in "wait" mode! Call or email to determine the progress of your application. Ask how long you think you might be waiting before you receive an answer in the affirmative or negative.
Believe it or not, this will help you not only appear enthusiastic and professional as a job seeker, but also more importantly will mean you are more in control of the process, and have more prediction in relation to anticipated job interviews, and job offers.
Many clients that deal with me I find become disappointed, distressed and upset when they don’t hear anything back, particularly if they have not received an answer, or if they receive a "No" response. What I don’t understand is, why are they applying for one, two or three positions?
Especially in the current economic climate, where the employment market is more competitive than ever, apply for a number of positions. This doesn’t mean start submitting applications for positions willy nilly, or to clog up the inboxes of recruitment consultants just so that you can say you have sent an application.
But as a rough guide, I think around 10 applications a day for the serious job seeker, is not unreasonable, particularly in this email/internet age, where you can send off your resume to ten people within half an hour if you are reasonably computer savvy. So, why not give this a try? Watch your phone and inboxes react with job interview requests!
