Global Financial crisis
Well the global financial crisis has hit so the media tell us so frighteningly. The only people that are really benefiting from this bad news are Safeway Liquor, the TAB and Impressive Resumes! Our workload has increased two to threefold.
Much as I don’t like to benefit from others’ misfortune, I do know that I have changed many lives over the last ten years, enabling them to achieve greater success with their resume, a better lifestyle and increased prosperity.
It seems the media attention has sparked a frenzy of people looking to earn more money, greater job security, or a more peaceful work environment.
Whilst at the time of the election Mr. Rudd told us employment was at a record low of 4%, this doesn’t help the clients with an outstanding background seeking a career change. At times like this, the key datum is that 85% of all positions are never advertised. Do your research. Write down a list of all the things you are looking for in a new position. Where? How much? What sort of company? What sort of company philosophy and culture? Size of organisation? Once you complete this fantastic exercise, you will have a finely tuned picture of where you want to go and what you want to do.
With this you can use various resources such as Google, the Yellow Pages amongst many others, to gain contact details. Forward your resume (with a covering letter of course) to these companies and wait for the telephone to ring or your inbox to fill up.
I tried this for myself in 1989 and got myself a job! It really does work.
Can fear of losing your job harm your Health?
According to an article in the Washing Post, dated 4 April, living in constant fear of losing your job can damage your mental and physical health far more than actually losing your job.
"Because of the unrelenting nature of the stress," the Post reported, "of a constant worry rather than a one time even like being fired - chronic job insecurity is linked more strongly to depression and health problems than actual job loss. The constant stress causes a variety of problems generally starting with sleeplessness, whcih is itself linked to yet more health problems."
It is well known that what you focus your attention on is the very thing that will invariably come into your life. If you do have reason to suspect that downsizing could be on the cards for your company, stop worrying about it. Instead focus on moving forward in a positive way. Undertake a new course of study that will increase your worth and open up new opportunities. Examine and establish your networking opportunities. Increase your level of savings to create a nest egg, which will support you for up to 3 months (this should be a goal no matter how secure your position is).
Be proactive and, if retrenchment does come, turn it into one of the most positive events of your life.
